I just wanted to thank everyone who called/emailed their Assembly reps because Bill A1671 passed on the Assembly floor today!

I am working with the sponsoring Senators and they hope to reintroduce the bill into the Senate in May.  With any luck, we can get it heard in committee prior to the summer break.

Thank you,

Dorothy

MAY 16, 2007

Status:  Referred to committee.

Please write both the Senate and Assembly Education committee chairmen and ask them to post the bill in committtee.  We need to get it on the agendas of the June 7, 2007 meetings before the summer hiatus.  Otherwise, it will most likely not get enacted by end of year and then we'll have to start all over.

Be sure to include the correct bill number in all correspondence.

Senate Bill number S2675 - Senate Education Committee Chairman:  Shirley Turner

Assembly Bill number A3148 - Assembly Education Committee Chairman:  Craig Stanley

To access Senator Turner's and Assemblyman Stanley's email address, click on the links for Senate Committees and Assembly Committees that are on the left side of the site (you'll have to do each chairman one at a time).  Then click on "Education" on the right side.  This will bring up the Education committee and you can click on the Chairman's name to bring up their pages, where you can then click on "Contact your legislator".  Fill in the electronic correspondence page.  For Subject, select "Education - General" from the pulldown menu.  For email subject, fill in the correct bill number - S2675 for Senator Turner, and A3148 for Assemblyman Stanley.

Then copy and paste the appropriate email.

I understand that bill number S2675 that would allow parents of multiples the choice in classroom placement has been referred to the Education committee.   I strongly urge you to post this bill to be heard in your committee.

As you may know, most school districts separate multiples as "practiced policy" -- whether or not it is in the best interest of the children.  This policy is not based on any recent academic or behavioral studies.  In fact, most experts in the area of twin research recommend a flexible policy allowing the parents the choice in classroom placement.

There are no tax or spending implications of this bill.  Given that NJ leads the nation in numbers of multiples, shouldn't we lead the way in educating them?  We encourage your support so that all parents of multiples can direct their children's education in the best way they see fit.

Thank you for your support.  If you need additional information, please contact me.

Sincerely,

- Bill Number A3148 was introduced into the Assembly in 2006 by Alison Littell and Louis Greenwald.  It permits parents of twins/multiples to decide on classroom placement.  It will soon enter the committe phase.  Identical legislation to this bill is being prepared for introduction into the NJ Senate and Tom Kean will be a co-prime sponsor.

 - The committee phase requires advocacy and having a large group behind it will help (i.e. Twins Clubs).  The best way to help is to email their representatives expressing their support (see instructions and template below).  If they would like to collect signatures for a petition, to contact me and I will email a paper petition to them.

Instructions for emailing State Senators:

1.  Go to www.njleg.state.nj.us

2.  On the left side of the page under the heading "MEMBERS", click on "Find Your Legislator"

3.  On the right side of the page that appears under the heading "Search Legislative Members By:", click on "Electronic Correspondence"

4.  Select your municipality from the picklist and click the Find button, your representatives will appear.  Check all the boxes and click the Select button.

5.  An electronic correspondence page will appear, complete the personal information fields.  You may use the email template text included below or type your own message.  If a member of a twins club, put that as your group affiliation.

6.  Click Submit Email button

I understand that bills that would allow parents of multiples the choice in classroom placement are currently in committee in the Assembly (A3148) and will be introduced shortly in the Senate.   I strongly urge you to support these bills.

We presented at the NJ State Mothers of twins club meeting.  The area clubs were receptive to the idea to bring back the packages to their area clubs and try to find a member who will write their State Senator.  We are hoping to get one member from each club to write their senators.  I am gathering signatures also on my paper petition and hope to send my package off to my State Senator again soon.
